The adoption of an animal is a wonderful way to introduce young people to the study of the natural world. Over 60 years ago, the National Parent Teacher Association of the U.S. proclaimed the value of humane education. In a statement crafted at a national conference, the PTA declared that humane education teaches the principles of justice, goodwill, and humanity toward all life. It went on to assert that the cultivation of the spirit of kindness to animals can be the starting point for the development of a larger humanity which treats all peoples, and indeed all living things, with respect.

The traits needed to be caring, thoughtful, involved citizens are the same ones needed to be good pet owners: responsibility, caring for one another, trustworthiness, knowledge, respect, and a positive attitude.

By working with local schools and other organizations, humane educators can promote change in their community that helps not only animals, but the entire citizenry.

Humane education teaches the children and the adults in your community:

  • The value of kindness
  • Respect for animals and the environment
  • How to properly care for animals
  • The way animals behave
  • The consequences of irresponsible behavior toward animals

Our life-affirming rescue, rehabilitation and educational programs touch thousands of animals each year. Through tours of the Everglades Outpost and community outreach programs, thousands of people each year are educated about why wild animals should not be kept as pets, how to co-exist with wildlife and broader environmental issues of animal endangerment and extinction. The Everglade Outpost is a local non-profit, charitable organization supported entirely through donations, memberships, fund-raising events and our Animal Sponsorship Program.

When you adopt your favorite Everglades Outpost animal for yourself or a friend, you help share the care. Your tax-deductible support offsets the cost of food, shelter, enrichment programs and medical care for your animal.

For a year, your class will have a proprietary interest in their animal and in learning all about that animal and how it relates to, and is part of, the rest of the natural world. When young people are taught to value wildlife and nature, they are truly given a very special gift.

We will provide your class or organization with a certificate of adoption, photos, an animal fact sheet, and periodic progress reports charting the growth and development of the animal. One of our volunteers will also come to your classroom and share with you information about your animal's life and its importance in nature.
