Chewy (short for Chewbacca) is a dromedary, or one-humped or Arabian, camel who was born in mid-Florida and he was given to the Outpost when he was 5 months old.  His mother was a rare white camel with blue eyes.  When not misbehaving, Chewy has made several appearances during the Christmas season in live nativities. Apparently, spitting is a learned behavior and a habit that Chewy has not discovered.  Camels can go for long periods of time without water, though they do not store water in their humps - the humps are actually reservoirs of fatty tissue.  The average life expectancy of camels is 40 to 50 years.
