Our Mission
Located in Florida City, Everglades Outpost is one of the only facilities of its kind dedicated to the rescue,
rehabilitation, and release of wild and exotic wildlife.
Founders, Bob Freer and Barbara Tansey have been providing shelter and care at this location to Florida wildlife and exotic species since 1993.
As a wildlife refuge, we serve the community as custodians of our natural environment, by ensuring the survival and propagation of our native and endangered wildlife. Most of the animals residing at the Everglades Outpost have been confiscated due to illegal or abusive situations by Wildlife Fish and Game Officers, or have been abandoned by their human owners. Our rehabilitation facility provides medical care and treatment to the sick and injured. Whenever possible, the animals are released to their natural habitat. The animals that cannot be returned to the wild are placed in suitable homes, or remain here under our care for the remainder of their lives.
Our most important mission for the community is to educate the people of South Florida in the ways of conservation and the need for conservation efforts. In this respect, we provide a unique opportunity for our
members and
volunteers to study, up close and personal, exotic and endangered animals. We also provide
educational shows for schools and individual gatherings. Hopefully, experiences like these will enlighten our children (our future) and the general public of the plight of wild animals and the need for man to act as caretakers of our environment. Through tours of the Everglades Outpost, we hope to educate our community about why wild animals should not be kept as pets, how to co-exist with wildlife and broader environmental issues of animal endangerment and extinction.
Everglades Outpost is truly a magical place…a wondrous place where magnificent animal species and people join together in harmony. |
